Go Deeper!

Go Deeper..

Going natural seemed to be the easy way out. I mean, no more chemicals in you hair, certainly a smarter and safer choice. No more hiding from water - yes, I could swim whenever I wanted!

But let’s go a little deeper, going natural for me, also meant not having to conforming to social pressures, your free.

But wait, whose hair is this that’s growing out of my head!

I wash, condition and apply the products that are all the rave, after all Becky uses them and her hair looks fabulous.

But what’s up with my hair—the knots, frizz, and can I get a D for dry, dry and did I say DRY.?

Going natural has been the best decision I’ve made for my health and my hair, but it was not without its challenges.   From the big chop, figuring out styles, dealing with my families comments about my hair “rebellion”, to getting used to the fact that my hair had a mind of its own.

I eventually got use to the unpredictable curl patterns, but knotty, frizzy, dry hair left me wanting to reach for the creamy crack.

I was frustrated!

I resisted the urge and decided to create products that left Becky green with envy.

Curly hair’s worst enemy is dryness. So let’s take a closer look at how we can stop this diva!

Combating dryness can change the path of your natural hair journey.

There are various things that should be considered when discussing moisture, one basic science. The science of your hair pH is very important. A pH is the measure of how acidic a substance is.

The PH scale ranges from 0-14.

Your hair’s pH balance plays a vital role in hair moisture and how your hair reacts to products.

The right pH balance allows hair to hold moisture and maintain its sebum. Sebum is your hair’s natural conditioner, a protective shield that is responsible for maintaining moisture. Moisture is what gives your hair the ability to bend and not break during manipulation aka styling. When your hair loses its moisture, it becomes dry and breakage starts to happen.

So enough talk about what causes hair to become dry HOW CAN THIS BE FIXED…….

Well let’s look at the power herb know as Aloe powder. I know here we go with the aloe again what’s all the hype about.

So remember we just learned about pH balance, aloe powder can help you maintain a healthy pH balance and create a barrier that helps fight bacteria and fungus.

Aloe contains 18 of the 20 amino acids found in the body, vitamin A, B, C and E, with essential vitamins and minerals, which help to restore hair back to its prime health.

A normal pH balance seals your hair cuticles to maintain its’ moisture and natural oils.

Keeping your hair’s pH balance between 4.5-5.5 and use products that have less alkali and to help maintain acidity.  Most drug stores carry pH testing strips that can help you easily test your products.

Products that are highly alkaline will cause the hair follicles to expand and release much needed moisture. The loss of moisture causes it to become hard, dry and frail.

Hair is very sensitive to any changes to pH. Anything that throws off your pH balance will affect your hair’s ability to retain its strength and ability to maintain moisture. Chemical treatments such as dyes and relaxers alters your hair’s pH and increase the level alkaline, weakening the protein structure, causing DRY, brittle hair..

So the long and the short of it all is. protect your pH like your life depends on it, well the life if those beautiful tresses any way.

Until next time, when caring for natural hair, go deeper and keep moist, many blessings!
